Cat Bà adventures: beaches and bioluminescent bays

Cat Bà adventures: beaches and bioluminescent bays

On Day 47 we set out to explore the remaining beaches of Cát Bà Island—and discovered a hidden world after dark. We spent the day hopping between coves, letting the kids collect shells and race along the sand. At night we joined a bioluminescence kayak tour. Paddling through pitch‑black water, every stroke ignited blue‑green sparkles as tiny organisms responded to the disturbance. We navigated tunnels in the limestone cliffs, torn between watching the glowing water below and avoiding jagged rock above. A private beach swim under the stars capped off the experience.

Family travel tip: Bring a dry bag to keep essentials safe on kayak trips, wear water shoes for rocky landings and accept that photographing bioluminescence is nearly impossible—just enjoy it in the moment.
