Hanoi stopover: from pools to pho

Hanoi stopover: from pools to pho

Our brief stop in Hanoi felt like a microcosm of Vietnam. We stayed at a homestay with a pool, which was a godsend after a long bus ride. Once cooled down, we headed south to explore the caves around Tam Coc and then returned north to the capital’s frenetic Old Quarter. Watching locals navigate torrents of motorbikes with baskets balanced on their shoulders left us in awe.

We sampled bánh mì and pho from street stalls, dodged traffic to reach temples, and ended the day with an evening stroll around Hoàn Kiếm Lake. The juxtaposition of rural peace and city chaos reminded us why we travel: to experience contrasts and teach our kids to adapt.

Family travel tip: In Hanoi, cross streets slowly and confidently with local pedestrians, try street food from busy stalls (the turnover means freshness) and make time to rest between sensory‑heavy activities.

What contrast between city and countryside has most surprised you on your travels? Our Vietnam guide covers both experiences in depth. Our stay was $52, a solid deal for the comfort we got. Dinner cost $22, proof that tasty doesn’t mean pricey. Transport ran us $88, cheaper than many cities. Altogether, we spent about $178 for the day.
