Siem Reap temples and treasures: learning at the Landmine Museum

Our Siem Reap itinerary didn’t just focus on temples. After exploring Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm, we visited the Cambodia Landmine Museum. Run by former child soldier Aki Ra, the museum displays deactivated mines and tells stories of survivors. It was heavy but important, especially with older kids, and prompted thoughtful conversations about war and recovery.

We balanced this serious visit with a boat tour of a floating village and an afternoon at a lotus silk farm. Siem Reap offers a blend of history, culture and resilience that left a deep impression.

Family travel tip: Gauge your children’s readiness for sensitive topics; pair educational visits with lighter activities to process emotions.

Have you included museums in your travel with kids? Our Cambodia itinerary integrates learning and play so everyone stays engaged. Altogether, we spent about $1244 for the day.
