Rayong off the beaten path: warships and wildlife
Rayong off the beaten path: warships and wildlife
We knew Rayong would be different, but Day 67 took us completely off the beaten track. We started at the HTMS Prasae, a decommissioned World War II ship turned museum. The boys played “battleship,” spinning guns and exploring hatches while we shared the ship’s history. Axel bravely climbed down a ladder into the dark until common sense pulled him back up. Parenting on the road means turning every outing into a history lesson and a game.
Next we swapped scooters for a small boat and drifted through the Golden Meadow mangroves. Along the way we spotted huge monitor lizards, crabs and fruit bats the size of dogs, all while locals waved at us from the banks. Our pivot to Rayong was unplanned, and we chuckled when villagers asked why our family had come so far out. The answer: because curiosity beats comfort every time.
Family travel tip: Let kids direct the exploring—be it clambering over an old warship or counting fruit bats in the trees—and bring binoculars for wildlife spotting. This laid‑back province is perfect for spontaneous detours.
Would you detour for a warship or a mangrove adventure? If remote adventures with kids intrigue you, our customised itineraries make the unknown less daunting. Our stay was $120, a solid deal for the comfort we got. Lunch was $19, offering great value. Transport ran us $24, cheaper than many cities. Altogether, we spent about $163 for the day.
