Bangkok canals and countdown to takeoff

Bangkok canals and countdown to takeoff

On Day 71, we decided to soak up Bangkok’s waterways before our early morning flight. A long‑tail boat ride through the khlongs offered a peaceful window into old Bangkok: kids splashing in the water, monks passing between houses and vendors paddling by with fresh fruit.

Later, we drove through Chinatown and stopped for quick haircuts. Bangkok is Thailand’s only true cosmopolitan city; temples, factories and high‑rises sit side by side on the Chao Phraya delta. We ended the day near the airport, sharing pad Thai and mango sticky rice from a street vendor as we packed our bags.

Family travel tip: Take a khlong tour early to beat the heat, get haircuts in local neighbourhoods for a fun cultural experience, and savour street food near your hotel for an easy dinner before a flight.

Sometimes the best memories come from small, quiet moments like these: a haircut in Chinatown, a sunset cruise, a family trip to a floating market. This is unplanned parenting—finding joy in the unexpected and teaching our kids to love the journey, not just the destination.

What’s your favourite unexpected memory from a layover? Need ideas for your own Bangkok adventure? My family-friendly guide is full of suggestions. Altogether, we spent about $226 for the day.
