Homecoming in St. George: recharging after Asia
Homecoming in St. George: recharging after Asia
After weeks exploring Asia, we finally touched down at home. Our route took us from Taiwan through Seattle and Las Vegas before we reached St. George, Utah, the last leg of our world adventure. It’s always surreal to trade humid temples and busy markets for the red rock desert and big skies of home. We were greeted by familiar mountains and clear air, and the kids raced to our favourite spots, still buzzing from the flight.
I grew up knowing St. George as “Utah’s Dixie,” a place settled in the 1860s by cotton missionaries and surrounded by incredible public lands. Snow Canyon and Zion National Park are right on our doorstep; we took advantage by hiking through lava tubes and red sand dunes and letting the kids burn off energy. We tucked into favourite local foods like fry sauce with burgers and contemplated how pioneers turned this desert into home.
Family travel tip: Hydrate often in the desert, plan ahead for park passes, and let your children set the pace on hikes.
Coming home always makes me reflective. There’s comfort in quiet suburban streets and the ability to see stars again. Being home reminded us that even unplanned parenting needs a base—here we refill our cups so we can say yes to whatever comes next.
