Sea to Cloud: The Road to Monteverde
Sea to Cloud: The Road to Monteverde
Driving from the coast up to Monteverde is like watching nature change channels. One minute you’re cruising past beaches, the next you’re climbing steep switchbacks lined with every shade of green imaginable. Mist clung to the road as we entered the cloud forest, and the boys squealed each time a coati dashed across. We learned why it’s called “Green Mountain” and why the locals have 50 words for ‘fog.’
Family travel tip: Monteverde’s roads are steep and often unpaved. Rent a sturdy vehicle, go slowly, and stop for leg stretches at scenic viewpoints. Layers are essential—temperatures drop as you climb. Reward yourself with a slice of coconut bread when you reach town.
