Mall Musings: Dubai vs. Thailand and Shanghai

As we wandered through the Dubai Mall, I couldn’t help comparing it to the mega‑malls we’d seen in Thailand and Shanghai. Aside from the famous aquarium and dancing fountains, it felt like any other massive shopping centre—same chain stores, same air‑conditioning, same crowds. It reminded me that malls rarely capture the heart of a place; markets, local eateries and neighbourhood walks do. Give me a street food stall over a food court any day.

Family travel tip: Malls can provide respite from heat and rain, but don’t let them dominate your itinerary. Seek out souks, night markets and family‑run restaurants for a true taste of local life. If you do visit a mall, time it around other cultural activities.
