El Salvador, Part 1: El Tunco (aka Surf City)
Landed and headed straight for El Tunco, which is basically ground zero for surf culture here — Enzo hopped on a wave that I thought he could handle and gave it his best “hang ten” without ever touching real water — lasted about 4 seconds and called it a win. We also scored haircuts for all 3 boys for a total of $6! This was soon to be the best-priced win of the entire trip, as we have learned that Central America is pretty much USA prices now.
The real waves here are no joke, though. Watched them crash straight up over the railing from the balcony, close enough that the boys got sprayed and thought it was the best thing that ever happened to them. The tide pools were a death trap so we had to cancel that dream too.
Tropical Storm Cristina had other plans. Beaches got shut down for safety, so we pivoted north back to the capital to see some churches instead — more on that next post. El Tunco was a good first taste, though. We’ll take a rain check (literally) on the surfing. We rented a car that felt like a clown car every time we got in. It had a go-kart engine, but it was nice because we were tiny and could squeeze where we needed to.
