El Salvador Part 11 — Los Termales and the Great Bus Escape
Our last activity in El Salvador was Los Termales, a hot spring river that runs over the rocks and finishes off with a huge waterfall. You read that right — the whole river is hot. There’s steam coming off the water in some of the photos. $14 for all of us to get in.
Axel, Enzo, and Kelsey got in the water and lasted maybe a few minutes at a time because it was effing HOT. My guess was around 90 degrees, hotter in the pools where it wasn’t moving. They kept scooting around trying to find a spot that wasn’t cooking them. Xander and I stayed out of the river and kept our dignity dry. The waterfall itself was the payoff — three big falls dumping into a pool with cliffs all around it. Locals were swimming right up under them.
Then the fun part. This was the end of our El Salvador leg, so I drove the rental back to San Salvador solo, dropped it off, and bused back out to the family for $4. Then we all took the bus across the border into Guatemala City — $23 for the five of us. Very long travel day. Bus station waiting rooms, border crossing, tuk-tuks everywhere on the other side.
Somewhere in there, Xander finally got the Takis hamburger he’d been begging for since we got to El Salvador — Wendy’s advertises the thing everywhere down here. He got sick from it. Mission accomplished, I guess.
That travel day also caused us to make certain decisions about our next country changeover that would have some very big ramifications. More on that later.
Next up: Guatemala!
