El Salvador, Part 2: San Salvador & Churches

Tropical Storm Cristina had other ideas about our beach plans, so we pivoted up to the capital instead. Turned out to be a good trade.

First stop was the National Library, which was way cooler than we expected — they’ve got whole sections themed around Harry Potter and Marvel to get kids reading, complete with a Platform 9¾ photo setup and a life-size Deadpool. Enzo was not impressed by the cage-eyed owl, but Axel found his people at the Quidditch hoop. Xander got his photo with Deadpool looking unimpressed, too, so maybe that’s just his personality this trip. He is becoming a real teenager/man.

From there we wandered through the main plaza with the big equestrian statue (pigeons everywhere, of course) in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral, then made our way to a second church that was almost the opposite vibe — dark wood ceiling, gold altar, and a full mural of angels painted above the archway you don’t notice until you look up, plus some genuinely stunning old stained glass up close.

Then a total change of pace at the LDS Temple, all white stone and quiet, followed by one more church that took the stained glass thing to a whole different level — floor to ceiling rows of it running the length of the building, throwing color everywhere the light hit. Empty enough that we could actually take it in without rushing.

Storm or no storm, not a bad way to spend a day we didn’t plan for.
