End of the Road: Manzanillo

End of the Road: Manzanillo

End of the Road: Manzanillo

We reached the literal end of the road at Manzanillo, a sleepy town where pavement gives way to jungle trails and turquoise sea. We hiked through Gandoca‑Manzanillo Refuge, spotting howler monkeys and raccoons, and swam at Playa Punta Uva’s calm bay. With no big resorts or crowds, it felt like our own slice of paradise. Over dinner of grilled fish we toasted to roads less travelled.

Family travel tip: Manzanillo is ideal for families seeking quiet beaches and nature walks. Pack insect repellent and plenty of water. Support small, locally owned restaurants and lodges; they’re part of what makes this area special.
