Into the Darkness: Caving in Nuevo Arenal

Into the Darkness: Caving in Nuevo Arenal

Into the Darkness: Caving in Nuevo Arenal

On a rainy day in Nuevo Arenal we ventured into a dark lava tube cave armed with headlamps and curiosity. Bats swooped overhead and cold water rushed around our ankles, but the boys pushed past their fears and followed our guide deeper inside. We saw sparkling mineral formations and a tarantula the size of my hand. Emerging into daylight felt triumphant—a lesson in courage for all of us.

Family travel tip: Always use licensed guides for cave tours; they provide helmets and know the safest routes. Wear long sleeves and quick‑dry pants. Keep a spare dry bag and change of clothes in the car. Afterwards, warm up with a cup of hot chocolate in the nearby town of Nuevo Arenal.
