Guatemala Part 15: Ferry to La Avellana + Autosafari Chapin

Two ways to get to our next stop: drive the highway, 1 hour 20 minutes, or take the local vehicle ferry from Monterrico to La Avellana and save 45 minutes. Easy choice. Only real concern was whether my rental car insurance covers “boat sinks with car on it,” which I’m guessing it does not. Loaded the car onto a wooden boat with a handful of other vehicles and putted across the mangroves. No sinking, 45 minutes saved, on with the day.

Next stop was Autosafari Chapin, half drive-through safari, half walk-around zoo. Drove through for the zebras, giraffes, and a pack of hippos just sitting there with their eyes above the waterline like they were waiting on something. They found it, as soon as we drove by, the Hippos came out of the water and escaped to the next enclosure. Stopped and fed the giraffes, which is a weirder sensation than you’d think: a giant blue tongue just wrapping around a carrot out of your hand. Parked and walked the rest for the jaguar, a puma, macaws, and a monkey enclosure that Xander got right up on the fence with. Also did the obligatory cutout board photos, because apparently we’re now that family.

Onto whatever’s next.
