Honduras 4: Cataratas Pulhapanzak
Same river spring as the swim spot from last post, turns out, just the part of it that actually tries to kill you a little. Pulhapanzak is a proper waterfall, tall enough that you feel it in your chest before you see it, and they’ve built two ways to mess with it: a zipline that runs you out over the top of the falls, and a guided scramble that takes you in behind it.
We did both, all five of us. The zipline is a handful of lines strung across the gorge above and alongside the falls, helmet and harness, nothing complicated, except that halfway across you’re staring straight down into the spray with a rainbow sitting right in the middle of it. Not the longest zipline any of us have done, but easily the best view one’s ever come with.
Then behind the falls, which is the real one. Helmets and life jackets on, the guide leads you down and around to where you’re climbing over wet rock with the entire waterfall roaring a few feet away, and eventually you’re walking straight through the curtain of it into a cave carved out behind the water. It’s loud in a way that’s hard to explain, the kind of loud you feel more than hear, and you come out the other side completely soaked and a little rattled in a good way. Enzo, unbothered as ever, found the giant chair to chill in.
We are also gluttons for punishment and decided to go back to the Chinese restaurant, but only ordered 1 plate. It was again larger than anything previously, and the 5 of us were just barely able to finish.
