Honduras 5: Puerto Cortés and the Ferry to Paradise
We took a detour out to Puerto Cortés to visit Kelsey’s nephew, who’s out serving an LDS mission down here. Funny thing was, while we were tracking him down, we ran into a second, totally unrelated companionship on the street, so we just decided to take each pair out to dinner as we had 2 nights. We have run into missionaries in every country and many small towns. It’s something that I hope makes a positive impression for my kids.
Turned out to be a genuinely great little town. Streets full of characters; one gate we walked past had three little dog snouts poking out beneath it in a row, like a cartoon. We got roped into an activity one evening, something for newer members to learn a bit of church history, which was neat to sit in on even if we didn’t follow all of it. Otherwise it was a low-key stop: a beach day, actual R&R, nothing on the schedule. Got the boys haircuts for $3 a head, and I finally let a barber take a straight razor to my beard, which felt like tempting fate but the guy clearly knew what he was doing.
Then we packed up, drove to La Ceiba, and caught the ferry out to Utila. Somewhere between the dock and the island, the whole trip reset. The water turned that impossible turquoise, sailboats bobbing everywhere, and we got in just in time to watch the sun go down over the water from a hammock on the dock. Found paradise, or something close to it.
