Honduras 6: Utila
Utila is small, the kind of island you can circle in an afternoon, and we tried to do exactly that.
First morning we booked a boat out to Water Cay with Bush’s Tours, a little sandbar island a short ride off Utila with some of the best snorkeling we’ve hit on this trip. Water so clear it barely counted as swimming, more like floating in air. Xander somehow found three pairs of sunglasses lost in the sand under the water, which is either incredible luck or the kid has a gift, and either way it was nice to have a few pairs for the island, so it worked out.
Then we rented a golf cart for 24 hours and just drove the whole island, no real plan. Let Xander and Axel each take turns behind the wheel, which is exactly as chaotic as it sounds on narrow island roads, but they both handled it fine. Caught an epic sunset, hit a string of empty beaches, and somewhere in there Axel jumped off the dock balcony into the water, allegedly under his own power, though there’s some dispute about whether he had a firm helping hand from his mom. Full moon to seal the deal.
