Flash Flood Fun at Gunlock Falls

Flash Flood Fun at Gunlock Falls

Flash Flood Fun at Gunlock Falls

Spring rains turned Gunlock State Park into a waterfall wonderland, and we squeezed in a visit before the road closed. Within forty minutes the creek rose over a foot, sending cascades over the red rocks and turning the usually dry canyon into a playground. The boys hopped across slick stones while I kept a watchful eye and snapped photos. It was a powerful reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the thrill of witnessing it together.

Family travel tip: When chasing seasonal waterfalls like those at Gunlock, check park alerts and weather forecasts. Wear sturdy shoes with grip and keep little adventurers close—flash floods can arrive quickly. Bring towels and a change of clothes; there’s nothing like a spontaneous swim to make memories.
